The Atlantic Northeast Blossoms As Beer Supply Producer Once More

Before Prohibition crippled the nation’s brewing supply industry, Maine and other areas of the Atlantic Northeast were widely regarded as the best locations from which to source hops and other ingredients for beer. However, between natural predations (aphids for instance) and manmade disasters (Prohibition), what was once a thriving industry fell apart. 15 or 20 years ago, you would have been hard pressed to find a hop yard operating in the area.

Montpellier France Vineyard

One day we took the time to visit one of the local vineyards near Montpellier. We arrived at the Les Coteaux De St Christol Winery in the early afternoon and were treated to some great southern French hospitality.

France’s Wine Country

My wife and I were invited to France by the Mastalerz family living in Montpellier in southern France. We soon realized that this would be a trip of a life time. We also decided to visit Paris and some vineyards during our travels.

Racking Your Wines

What Exactly is it? Racking is an essential part to the presentation of any wine. It takes a particular rack though to show off the fine wine and make a lasting presentation to your guests.

Decanting White Wine

If you’re like most, when you think of a crystal wine decanter, you conjure up images of deep red wine–Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Syrah, etc. Wines high in tannins with sediment resting on the bottom of the bottle–the perfect candidates for decanting. Rarely is it that one thinks of decanting white wines. Most would argue that it is unnecessary to do so. Actually, not so.

The Reason Why You Should Never Drink Hard Alcohol

Do you know why you should not drink hard alcohol? The first thing that you need to be aware of is that…

Get the Most Out of Wine Tasting

Whether you’re touring Napa or the Rhone Valley in France, going to a formal tasting or setting up a tasting for your friends and family, it’s important to be aware of the finer points of wine tasting to bring the most to the experience. If you’re setting up a tasting, the order of the wines is important. The lightest bodied wine should be tasted first and these are most often white wines.

Champagne and Some Great Champagne Brands

Champagne is a sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France, about 90 miles northeast of Paris. It is made by a special method called the Methode Champenois. Sparkling wine from anywhere else is simply not Champagne, even if it is made by the Methode Champenois. I laugh when I see cheap bottles of $5-$10 of wine labeled Champagne in the local store, knowing they are not the real thing. Even if these sparkling wines are made from the same grape varieties, and made using the same method, they will taste different.

Mezcal Fair in Oaxaca, Mexico, Reaches New Heights in 2011

Mezcal, the spirit made from the agave plant, is produced mainly in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca. What better way to exalt and promote the spirit than to hold Mexico’s Feria Nacional del Mezcal in Oaxaca. The July, 2011, 14th annual mezcal festival turned a corner. It has become a class, multi-facet event, and will stand mezcal in good stead over the coming years.
