A Rose By Any Other Name

It is springtime in Naples, Florida which here means 80 plus degree days and increasing levels of humidity. Funny but after a cold and dreary winter humidity feels good! Springtime means two things to me…boating and rose.

Art in a Bottle

St. Supery’s Elu blend is as intriguing on the inside as the outside. The St. Supery estate wines sport the classic, no frills label, but their red and white Meritage blends stand out on the shelf. Joel Nakamura is the artist responsible for the beautiful design on the 2005 Elu label. This Santa Fe, New Mexico artist is inspired by Native American folklore and mythology.

What Is A Merlot?

Many people realize that wine can be an excellent addition to your culinary adventures, but not everyone fully understands all of the terminology surrounding the wine industry. For those who are interested in wine but wouldn’t call themselves aficionados, even something as common as the word “merlot” could be lost on them. To that end, merlot is more than just a word printed on a bottle of red.

Sun of the Mountain

Ninquen was founded in 1998 by brothers Eduardo and Hernan Gras and Cristian Hartwig when they boldly sowed Chile’s first mountain vineyard. Ninquen translates to “Plateau on a Mountain” in the ancient Mapuche language. They specialize in three wines at their winery; a red blend, a Syrah and a Cabernet Sauvignon – Carmenere blend. The Antu Niquen Cabernet Sauvignon- Carmenere is a beautiful and uncommon blend, especially in terms of our domestic wines. Chileans have been working with Carmenere since its rediscovery in 1994. See The Lost Grape. Because of the combination of these two specific grapes with their own unique qualities, this wine has a deep complexity.

What Is ‘Craft Beer’?

Did you know that beer is the most popular beverage in the United States? The United States produces about 6 billion gallons of beer annually, the most of any country in the world. While the majority of beer consumption are the mass produced American Style Lagers, 4% of the beer produced comes from the craft beer sector. The craft beer industry has slowly, slowly been growing and spreading its wings, but they are still a fairly new market. After Prohibition (I still can’t believe Americans were prohibited from drinking), it wasn’t until the late 1970′s that laws were lifted to allow smaller production breweries to start getting creative.

Wine Review: HDV Belle Cousine 2006, Napa Valley Wine

There are so many small production wines these days, it takes a bit more than ’boutique small producer’ in the description of a wine to impress us and the consumer. However, with the mention of the names “Hyde” and “Romanee-Conti” our ears are open, add $50 retail price and we are listening…intently.

Lager or Ale? Either Way It’s Baltic Bliss

Baltic Porter; a style that bends the rules. Lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures creates a delicious full flavored high-gravity beer with a crisp lager finish.

Craft Beer in a Can?

Is it true? Can it be possible? Craft beer in a can?I know what you are all thinking. Isn’t a can reserved for the inferior yellow beers? Think again. Oskar Blues, a small brewery located in Lyons, Colorado are doing things a little differently.

Wine Review: Abiouness Rose of Pinot Noir

Although the wine business is mostly fun and games, this month we are turning a bit more serious in the name of a great cause. This October, Breast Cancer Awareness month celebrates its 25th anniversary and it seems at this point everyone is on board. NFL players are wearing pink cleats, pink ribbons are a dime a dozen, and there are more events to attend this month than you can count on two hands. Is it all necessary?

A Food Friendly Beer

Pangaea: Not your everyday pale ale. In fact, I think this beer creates its own style category. When someone asks me about it, I have a difficult time describing it in few words. Light in color in body, ginger on the palate, slightly spicy and a crisp, clean finish. The best part about it is that it’s one of those rare beers that pairs perfectly with food.
