In 1973, Founder Dick Bush, who had his doctorate in metallurgical engineering from Stanford and a vibrant career, decided to drop it all and head for the mountains with his wife, Leslie, and their kids. When they planted a vineyard, it was radical for the region, because just six years earlier, there were only 12 acres of vines in all of El Dorado County. Not only that –they planted their 32-acre vineyard at an altitude of 3,000 feet, making Madroña’s vines the highest in California for decades. Pretty soon, the wine was pouring quite nicely, and from 1994 to1997 the family planted two other nearby sites, both at elevations between 2,800 and 3,000 feet, for a total of 67 acres.
