In the late 1980s, Owner Courtney Benham stumbled upon 1,500 cases of Martin Ray wine hidden in a San Jose warehouse. Pioneering Winemaker Martin Ray founded his Santa Cruz winery in 1943 and was one of the first to champion 100% varietal wines in California. Ray’s historical significance and philosophy resonated with Courtney and, recognizing his good fortune, he purchased the brand. To house production, Courtney bought the historic Martini & Prati winery facility (est. 1881) in Sonoma.
Now, he and his winemaking team, headed up by Principal Winemaker Leslie Renaud, devote themselves to Ray’s ideology of making wines of place.
